Overview

What engineered bamboo is

Bamboo is a grass rather than a tree, and its culms are hollow, thin-walled and divided by nodes. It cannot be sawn into wide boards the way a log can, so usable panels and boards are made by breaking the culm down and reassembling it. The material is engineered from the very beginning rather than cut from something solid.

There are two main routes. In laminated bamboo the culm is split into narrow strips, planed and bonded edge to edge and face to face, so the board shows a regular pattern of strips, flat-pressed where the strips lie flat or vertical where they stand on edge. In strand woven bamboo the culm is crushed into fibrous strands, coated with adhesive and compressed hard, giving a dense board with a swirling, far less regular figure.

The differences from hardwood are the point of this page. The two routes give noticeably different appearance, density and surface behaviour. Colour in darker products often comes from a heat process rather than from the species or a stain. And because the material contains a substantial amount of adhesive, it does not respond to moisture, sanding or refinishing the way a solid hardwood board does, while movement with humidity remains real.

Moisture behaviour
The material moves with humidity, and the two production routes do not move in the same way as each other. Acclimatisation before installation, and control of the room's humidity afterwards, are normal parts of any discussion with the supplier.
Surface wear
Strand woven boards are markedly denser and harder at the surface than laminated ones, which is why the two are often presented as separate products rather than as variants. Density is not the whole story: the finish on top does much of the work.
Appearance
Laminated boards show regular strip lines and the node marks of the culm, while strand woven boards show an irregular, almost marbled figure. Darker tones usually come from heating the material rather than from a stain, and colour can vary between batches.
Repairability
Because the boards contain a large amount of adhesive and are frequently finished in the factory, sanding back and refinishing is not the routine option it can be with solid hardwood. Replacing boards is often the more realistic route.
Installation dependency
Fixing method, expansion allowance at perimeters, substrate condition and acclimatisation all follow the supplier's guidance, which varies between products considerably more than most owners expect.
Substrate dependency
The subfloor or backing has to be flat, dry and prepared as the supplier requires, and the choice between bonding, floating and mechanical fixing follows from what is underneath.
Documentation
Because behaviour here is a product characteristic rather than a species characteristic, the supplier's technical guidance, adhesive information and warranty conditions are the reference point for everything.

  • Is there underfloor heating, and has the supplier confirmed that this product is made for use over it?

  • Is any of the material going outdoors, and is it specifically a product made for external exposure?
  • How much direct sunlight falls on the surface, given that colour can shift noticeably in strong light?

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Substrate flatness, moisture content and preparation are the usual controlling factors for any floor installation.
  • A separating or moisture-control layer may form part of the build-up depending on what sits below the floor.
  • Expansion gaps at perimeters and at thresholds are part of the design of the installation, not an afterthought.
  • Adhesive choice depends on both the product and the substrate, and comes from the supplier's guidance.
  • Where panels are used in joinery, the edge treatment and any backing panel affect how they behave over time.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Laminated and strand woven products look substantially different, so samples of the actual product are essential.
  • Node marks are a natural feature of the culm and appear across the face of laminated boards.
  • Depth of colour in darker products comes from processing and can vary noticeably between production batches.

  • What happens if the material is wetted, and how quickly does that need dealing with?
  • Is a batch-matched reserve of boards being kept for repairs and replacements later on?
  • How does the product behave at thresholds and doorways, where two different conditions meet?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What cleaning products and methods does the supplier say are appropriate for this surface?
  • Can this product be sanded and refinished at all, or is replacement the expected route?
  • How are individual damaged boards replaced once the floor has been laid and the room is in use?
  • What does the warranty require in terms of the internal environment and ongoing upkeep?
  • Is there guidance on protective mats, castors and furniture feet for this particular surface?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Acclimatisation on site before installation is a supplier requirement on most of these products.

  • Bamboo is a grass, and treating it as though it were a hardwood is the source of most disappointment with it.
  • Laminated and strand woven products are frequently sold under one heading despite behaving quite differently.
  • The dark colour of some products comes from heating the material, which changes the material as well as the tone.
  • Refinishing is not always possible, so the factory finish is a longer-term commitment than a site-finished floor.
  • Adhesive content is substantial, and questions about emissions and about disposal are reasonable ones to ask.
