Stair Soffit Lining

Explains the underside of a flight as a lined position in its own right, separate from the roof soffit that shares its name and from the structure it conceals.

What a stair soffit is

A stair soffit lining closes the underside of a flight. Without it, the stringers, carriages, tread ends and the backs of the risers are all on view from below, and the space beneath the stair is open to whatever is above it.

It is a raking plane, sloping at the pitch of the flight and meeting level planes at each end, which makes it unlike almost every other lined surface in a building. That geometry is why it is treated as its own position: the junctions at the head, the foot and the two sides are each a meeting between a slope and something level or vertical, and those junctions are where the lining is made or lost.

  • It is not a soffit in the roof sense. The published soffit entry describes the board closing the underside of a roof overhang between fascia and wall — an external element that commonly carries eaves ventilation. A stair soffit lining is internal, rakes at the pitch of a flight, and has no ventilation function.
  • It is not a ceiling. A ceiling is a level plane closing a room from the structure above it; the stair soffit rakes, belongs to the stair rather than to a room, and commonly encloses a cupboard rather than an occupied space.
  • It is not a stair carriage. The carriage is the member beneath the flight that the lining is commonly fixed to; the lining is the surface, and one is concealed by the other.

  • That the stair soffit is the same component as a roof soffit. They share a name and share the idea of an underside, but one is an external roof edge element and the other is an internal raking lining.
  • That lining the underside is a purely cosmetic operation. What the enclosed space is used for, and what is required of the enclosure, commonly govern the lining more than appearance does.
