Overview
What gypsum block is
Gypsum partition blocks are solid units cast from gypsum in a factory, usually with a tongue along one edge and a matching groove along the other. They are handled as small masonry units and bedded together with a gypsum-based adhesive rather than a sand and cement mortar, so a wall is built up course by course rather than assembled from sheets.
The finished partition is monolithic and solid the whole way through. There is no frame, no cavity and no board layer, so the wall that is built is very nearly the wall that is finished, needing only jointing and a thin surface treatment before decoration. Its thickness is the thickness of the unit chosen rather than the depth of a frame plus boards.
That is what separates it from a lined stud partition, where thin boards are fixed to a frame and everything happens in the cavity behind. With gypsum blocks there is no cavity, so services must be chased into the solid material or planned elsewhere, and fixings go into solid gypsum rather than into a board and a stud. It is not plasterboard either: the same mineral, but cast as a solid wall unit instead of a thin sheet between paper liners.
