Riven and Sawn Timber Lath for Plaster

Overview

What timber lath is

Timber lath is a background for wet plaster made from narrow timber strips nailed across studs, joists or ceiling binders with a deliberate gap left between them. The first plaster coat is pressed through those gaps and squeezes out behind the lath, where it slumps and sets into nibs. Those nibs, rather than any adhesion to the face of the timber, are what hold the plaster in place.

Riven lath is split along the natural grain, so the strips follow the fibre, taper unevenly and have ragged edges that grip the plaster well. Sawn lath is cut to a regular section and looks uniform but crosses the grain, so it is more brittle and more likely to snap at a nail. Riven lath was normally split from timbers that cleave cleanly along the grain, characteristically oak or sweet chestnut, with larch and slow-grown pine also used, while sawn lath is usually softwood. Both were sized by hand to the framing they were fixed to.

This is the distinction that matters against the metal lath entry. Expanded or perforated steel lath is a dimensionally stable sheet that does not rot, does not shrink with humidity and keys through a formed mesh. Timber lath is an organic, moving material: it swells and shrinks with the seasons, is vulnerable to decay and insect attack where it has been wetted, and its nails corrode. A lath ceiling can look sound from the room while its nibs have already broken away above.

  • Work where a tested performance requirement applies to the construction, which is a property of a complete assembly rather than of a background.

Substrate dependency
The lath is not the finish and not the structure; it is a background whose only job is to hold a key. Its behaviour is inseparable from the studs, joists and nails that carry it, so a conversation about the plaster is really a conversation about the timber behind it.
Moisture behaviour
Timber lath swells, shrinks and can decay where it has been wetted, and the plaster keyed to it is the first thing to register that movement. Any history of water reaching the void changes what can sensibly be done to the surface.
Repairability
Patching lath and plaster is a specialised operation because the new work has to key in the same way and move at a similar rate. A hard modern repair set into soft original work tends to crack around its edge rather than blend in.
Maintenance
There is no routine maintenance to a background that is buried, which is exactly the difficulty: deterioration happens out of sight and is usually noticed only when the plaster face begins to move, crack or sag.
Appearance
A lathed surface is gently uneven, and lath lines can show as faint horizontal banding under raking light. Owners who expect a modern flat plane are often surprised, and flattening the surface loses the character of the room.
Installation dependency
Lath spacing, nailing and the flexibility of the strips all affect how the plaster keys, and a repair that closes the gaps or uses over-rigid material will not form nibs at all. This is craft work rather than a boarding operation.
Documentation
Ask for a written record of what was found in the void, what was replaced and what plaster system was used over it. Nothing about a buried background can be checked later without opening the surface again.

  • Is the space subject to large seasonal swings in humidity that will move timber lath and open cracks in the plaster over it?
  • Has water ever entered the ceiling void from a roof, a tank or a bathroom above, and what did it leave behind?

  • Does the building rely on moisture-open finishes, and would a change of finish alter how this background behaves?
  • Are there signs of insect activity or decay in nearby exposed timber that suggest the lath should be inspected?

  • The condition of the studs, joists and binders that carry the lath governs everything that can be done to the plaster.
  • Nail type and corrosion state determine whether the lath is still held, and old nails can fail without visible warning.
  • The gap between laths controls how the plaster keyed originally, and a repair that closes those gaps will not key at all.
  • Plaster type matters, because a lath background was built around a soft and flexible coat rather than a hard modern one.
  • Where lath meets a masonry wall or a chimney breast, the change of background is a recurring crack line that needs a detail.

  • Surfaces built over lath are rarely flat in the modern sense, and the gentle undulation is part of the character of the room.
  • Lath lines can telegraph through a thin finish as faint horizontal banding when light rakes across the wall.

  • Original mouldings, cornices and curved returns were formed to suit this background and constrain how far a surface can be flattened.

  • Have earlier repairs introduced a harder material that is now cracking away from the softer original work?
  • What loads have been added above the ceiling since it was built, and has anyone assessed them?
  • Is there evidence of past insect attack or decay that would change the expected life of the background?

  • Can the plaster be consolidated and repaired in place, or has the background failed to the point where replacement is discussed?

  • How will dust, debris and vibration be controlled so that sound plaster elsewhere in the room is not loosened?

  • The spacing and alignment of the existing framing dictate where new lath can be fixed and how it lines through.

  • Adjoining finishes, skirtings, cornices and electrical accessories all constrain how far a lathed area can be opened up.
  • Protection and propping of surrounding original plaster is planned before any lath is removed from a ceiling.

  • The plaster is held by nibs hidden behind the lath, so the visible face tells you very little about the real condition.
  • Replacing lath with a rigid board changes how the whole surface moves, and the junction with retained original work becomes the weak point.
  • Old nails often fail before the timber does, and a sound-looking lath can still be loose on the joist.
  • Removing a lath ceiling releases a great deal of dust and debris from the void, which affects sequencing and protection.
  • Historic surfaces may carry decorative schemes or evidence that is destroyed the moment the plaster comes down.
