Overview

What wattle and daub is

Wattle and daub is one of the oldest infill techniques in European building. Within the opening formed by the members of a timber frame, upright staves are sprung between grooves or holes, and flexible rods are woven horizontally between them to make a basket-like lattice. That lattice is the wattle, and it is structurally part of the panel rather than a surface applied to one.

The daub is the earth-based mixture worked into and through that lattice from both faces, filling the panel across its full thickness. Traditionally it combined subsoil clay with a fibre such as straw or animal hair and a binder, dung among them, in proportions that varied by region and by the material available locally. This entry gives no mixes, proportions or method, because that is conservation practice rather than reference reading.

The distinction worth holding onto is against riven lath and clay or lime plaster. Those are a background and a finish applied over the face of a wall, several layers deep at most. Wattle and daub is the wall panel itself, occupying the full thickness between the frame members, and mistaking one for the other is the source of a great many inappropriate repairs.

Traditional buildings generally manage moisture by allowing it to move through their materials and evaporate. That behaviour is fundamental to how earth infill panels work, and it is why material choices around them matter so much.
Substrate dependency
The panel is held by the timber frame around it, so the condition of the frame, its grooves and its fixings governs everything about the infill within it. Frame and panel are assessed together, never separately.
Repairability
Historic panels are normally repaired in like materials by an experienced practitioner rather than replaced. What survives has evidential value, and how much intervention is appropriate is a conservation judgement.

Panels are irregular by nature, following the hand that made them and the frame that holds them. Attempts to make them read as flat, modern surfaces usually damage both the appearance and the fabric.
