Overview

What lime plaster is

Lime plaster is made from lime binder, aggregate and water, and it sets slowly - partly by drying and, for non-hydraulic limes, by reacting with carbon dioxide from the air over a long period. That slowness is a feature rather than a defect: it lets the material accommodate small movements in the background instead of resisting them.

Compared with gypsum plaster it ends up softer, more flexible and considerably more open to water vapour. Older solid walls and timber-lath backgrounds were built on the assumption that moisture would enter the wall and leave again through the finish. A plaster that lets that happen behaves very differently from one that seals the surface.

Limes are not all alike. Non-hydraulic lime putty and the hydraulic limes differ in set, hardness and tolerance of damp conditions, and hair or fibre reinforcement is traditional on lath. Which lime suits a particular wall is a judgement for a qualified professional who has actually seen the background.
