Overview

What clay plaster is

Clay plaster is made from clay, sand and usually a fibre such as chopped straw or cellulose, applied wet and left to dry. Unlike lime and gypsum it does not set by a chemical reaction at all: it simply dries, and the clay particles hold the mix together by their own cohesion. That means it stays re-wettable, which is both its main quirk and its main limitation.

The property owners usually hear about is hygroscopic buffering - clay takes up moisture from humid air and gives it back as the air dries. Whether that produces a noticeable difference in a particular room depends on the quantity of plaster, the ventilation and how the room is used, so it is better treated as a characteristic than as a promised outcome.

Visually it is unmistakable: a deep matt, slightly grainy surface whose colour comes from the clay and sand rather than from paint. It is normally left uncoated or finished with a compatible mineral coating, since a conventional film-forming paint would cover both the texture and the buffering behaviour.

Moisture behaviour
Clay plaster remains re-wettable because it does not chemically set. It handles humidity in the air well and liquid water badly, and that distinction is the single most important thing to understand about it.
Substrate dependency
It needs a background with a suitable key and a compatible moisture behaviour. Dense sealed surfaces and gypsum skims are not automatic backgrounds for it, and a trial area is normal practice.
Appearance
The colour is the material, not a coating, so batches of clay and sand carry real variation. Samples from the actual batch, seen in the room's own light, tell you far more than a printed chart.
Surface wear
The surface is soft compared with a gypsum skim. It marks and dusts more readily, which some owners accept as part of the character of the material and others quickly do not.
Repairability
Because it re-wets, damaged areas can often be reworked rather than cut out - one of the few finishes where a repair can genuinely disappear if the material is properly matched.
Maintenance
Cleaning options are limited, since wet cleaning works against the material. Owners should understand this before choosing it for a hallway, a family kitchen or a busy landing.
Documentation
Formulations vary widely between suppliers, and the supplier's own guidance on backgrounds and compatible coatings is the reference that actually matters here.

  • The background must offer a key and must not be sealed against the plaster taking hold.
  • Some boards are made for earth plasters and some are not; the difference is worth confirming.
  • Reinforcing mesh or scrim is often used at junctions between different backgrounds.
  • Insulation or vapour layers behind the wall change how the finish behaves over time.
  • Where the wall meets tiled or wet areas, the transition detail needs deliberate thought.

  • Is there a plan for keeping spare material for future touching in?
  • Does the household accept a softer, more marking surface than a painted skim?

  • Is spare plaster from the same batch being kept on site for later repairs?
  • Who would carry out a repair, and are they familiar with earth plasters?

  • Buffering is a property of the whole room, not of a small decorative panel of plaster.
  • Because it does not set chemically, water spilled on it does not simply dry off harmlessly.
  • A conventional paint applied later cancels most of the reasons for choosing it.
  • Batch variation is a feature of the material, and mixing batches mid-wall shows.
  • Owners often underestimate how matt the surface is until they see it lit at night.
