The facing stops at the cut
On a melamine-faced panel the decor is fused into the board surface and cannot be peeled back, which sounds durable and says nothing about the edges. Every cut exposes the raw core, and the panel is only as protected as its edge treatment. A board sold as moisture resistant is a modified core, not a waterproof panel.
A bonded laminate sheet has the same geography with an extra weakness. The laminate face is dense and the exposed edge and the glue line are not, so moisture reaching an edge can lift the sheet. A wipeable surface does not make the panel waterproof, and the sheet has no strength of its own at all.
Wrapped doors move the problem rather than removing it
On a foil-wrapped door the film continues around the profiled sides and returns onto the back, so there is no applied edge band. The film is held by an adhesive rather than fused into the surface, and sustained heat and steam tend to soften that bond and lift the skin, usually starting at a corner, an edge or the line where the wrap turns onto the reverse.
The wrap also does not reach everything. Hinge borings, handle holes and the trimmed back edge can leave the core exposed, and the back face is a separate backing sheet, so the door is not symmetrical and cannot be treated as reversible.
The adhesive, not the strip, is usually what fails
Edge banding is an assembly component rather than a decorative trim, and the adhesive matters as much as the strip. Machine-applied hot-melt, reactive polyurethane, zero-joint systems and pre-glued tapes ironed on by hand all leave a different bond and a different glue line, and the one that fails first near a steam source is generally the adhesive.
A pre-glued tape ironed on by hand is bonded by eye and by hand pressure, which is a different process from machine banding rather than a smaller version of it. Water is permanent, not cosmetic
