Setting Out a Perforated or Open Surface

Perforated plasterboard, punched metal, wood wool board, woven mesh and hanging baffles look like five unrelated products in a catalogue. On site they share one governing property: the thing that makes them what they are is made in a factory before anyone measures your room, and the room then has to be drawn to suit it.

Each of these has its own reference page describing what it is made of and how it behaves. None of those pages can answer the question this one exists for, which is what has to be agreed, and in what order, before the lining is built — because by the time a board is being lifted into place the decisions have already been taken by default.

Nothing here states what any of these surfaces will do acoustically. That belongs to a qualified acoustic professional working from the whole room and from the manufacturer's own measured data. What this guide covers is the setting out, the cutting, the jointing and the layer behind, which are decisions the owner and the designer take together and which cannot be revisited later.

What these five surfaces actually share

A plain lining board can be cut anywhere and jointed anywhere, because nothing on its face has to line through. Every surface in this family has something on its face that does: a punched hole pattern, a routed slot, a strand texture, a weave direction, or a rhythm of hanging elements. That is the whole difference.

Because the face carries geometry, a cut lands somewhere within it. A board cut at a perimeter leaves part holes. A punched panel creases and cannot be dressed out. A woven mesh is tensioned between fixings rather than screwed like a board. A wood wool board exposes loose strands at every cut edge.

The setting-out drawing is the decision

For all of these, the drawing rather than the order is the point at which the room is committed. It fixes where the joints fall, how wide the plain border at the wall is, which way the boards or panels run, and where the pattern is interrupted. Once boards are ordered to that drawing, the drawing is the building.

This pulls a decision that normally sits late in a project a long way forward. On a plain lining the layout is settled by whoever is boarding on the day. Here it has to be produced, reviewed and agreed by the client before anything is ordered, and the practical question is who in the team is producing it.

The layer behind the holes is part of the finish

An open surface is only open because something is meant to be reached through it. On perforated gypsum board that is a bonded fleece, a cavity and whatever has been specified within it. On a punched metal panel it is an absorbent layer that has to be installed and retained before the facing goes on, because it cannot be adjusted afterwards.

The same logic applies visually. The fleece behind perforated board is visible in raking light and its colour is part of the finished appearance. Behind an open weave the wall itself stays partly visible, along with any bracketry, services or lighting, so its colour and finish are a deliberate choice rather than whatever the wall happened to be.

Penetrations: does the light move, or does the pattern?

Every downlight, detector, sprinkler head, grille and access panel has to be placed relative to the pattern. There are only two answers, and they have to be chosen rather than discovered: either the penetrations are positioned to suit the pattern, or the pattern is cut to suit the penetrations wherever they happen to land.

Access is the version of this question that gets forgotten. A continuous perforated lining is a fixed surface, so reaching anything above it means cutting into it. Access panels therefore belong in the setting-out drawing alongside the lights, framed within the pattern rather than added afterwards where they look improvised.

Decoration and cleaning, decided before rather than after

On a perforated lining the holes must not be filled, which rules out the ordinary approach of skimming the whole face or rolling paint liberally across it. A single coat applied by a well-meaning decorator can close the route the board exists to provide. Whether any decoration is accepted at all is a statement the manufacturer makes about its own product.

Wood wool board behaves the same way for the same reason: painting on site closes the open face. Open weaves and punched ceilings collect dust in places a cloth cannot reach, and cleaning access in a high space is something to design rather than discover. Whoever receives the building at handover needs to be told all of this.

Offcuts, spares and the repair nobody plans for

Making good damage on a patterned surface means aligning a patch with the pattern in both directions, which is a different exercise from filling and sanding a plain board. Keeping offcuts and recording the board or panel reference is what makes a future repair possible at all, and it costs nothing at the time.

Colour and texture matching between production runs is the harder half. Felt and fabric facings vary between batches, wood wool shades differ, and a mesh drop is usually replaced whole rather than repaired. Ordering spares from the original delivery is the only reliable answer, and it has to be asked for while the order is still open.

Who decides what

The acoustic expectation belongs to a qualified acoustic professional working from the room. Fixings into a soffit, and the weight of anything hung from it, are matters for a structural engineer. Anything to do with fire classification or tested linings rests with the manufacturer's documentation and the relevant authority. The setting out belongs to the designer, and the client signs it.

Before a patterned surface is ordered

Why can a perforated board not simply be cut to fit?

It can be cut, but every cut lands somewhere within the pattern, so a board cut for one position leaves part holes that read as untidy anywhere else. Plain board absorbs a room's irregularity in its jointing; a patterned board has to be set out on a drawing instead.

Does a perforated ceiling make a room quieter?

The perforation opens a path to whatever sits behind it, so any absorbent effect belongs to that whole build-up and to the room rather than to the board. What it would achieve in your room is a question for a qualified acoustic professional working from the manufacturer's test data.

What is the difference between woven mesh and perforated metal?
