Electrical Layout Discussion Preparation Checklist
Prepare an owner to mark up an electrical layout from the way rooms are really used, so positions are decided before first fix, while every question of requirements, testing and certification goes to an appropriately registered electrician.

The checklist
Work through the sections
Tick the boxes on paper or on screen — nothing is stored, so print the page if you want to keep your marks.
1.Walking each room the way you actually use it
Electrical layouts fail when they are drawn from a plan rather than from behaviour. Start by recording what people genuinely do in each space.
Walk each room and mark on a sketch where you actually stand, sit and put things down, before anybody starts positioning outlets or switches.
Positions derived from real behaviour survive contact with the finished house, and positions derived from symmetry rarely do.
Note which side of each doorway you instinctively reach for a switch when entering, since habit is stronger than logic and is almost never written down.
A switch on the unexpected side is a small daily irritation that nobody notices on a drawing and everybody notices in use.
Write down what happens in each room after dark, since evening use drives far more of these decisions than the way a room looks in daylight.
Rooms are usually visited and assessed during the day, which is precisely when their lighting needs are least visible.
Record every place in your present home where an extension lead is in use, and note what it is powering and why it ended up there.
Each extension lead marks a position somebody failed to anticipate, which makes them the most honest evidence available.
Note which rooms are used by people who would find a low, high or awkwardly placed outlet difficult to reach, and write that down explicitly.
Anything relating to accessibility must be confirmed with a qualified professional and against the requirements that apply locally.
2.The consumer unit, the meter and the incoming supply
These positions are usually inherited rather than chosen. The works are the one realistic opportunity to change them, so decide deliberately.
Photograph the consumer unit, the meter and all visible labelling before work begins, including any list fixed inside the cupboard door.
Labelling is frequently lost during works, and reconstructing which circuit does what afterwards takes far longer than a photograph.
Note whether the consumer unit can be reached without moving furniture or standing on something, and whether everyone in the household could reach it.
The moment somebody needs it is never the moment to discover it sits behind a wardrobe in a spare room.
Ask whether the layout being discussed puts any additional demand on the existing supply arrangement, and who would take that up with the supply company.
Anything at the supply company's own equipment is theirs to carry out under their process; ask a registered electrician who starts that conversation.
Write down whether the existing installation has documentation from previous work, and gather whatever paperwork you can find about it.
Ask a registered electrician what documentation applies to work on this installation; never assume existing paperwork is current or complete.
Note where any unit or meter would be relocated to, and decide whether that position is acceptable to look at and pass every day.
These items are functional and visible, and their new home is usually chosen for cable convenience unless the owner says otherwise.
3.Sockets, furniture and the ones always missed
Almost every regret about sockets is a furniture problem. Draw the furniture before you place a single outlet.
Draw each room's furniture at roughly the right size on your plan, marking where the back of a sofa, bed, wardrobe or bookcase would meet a wall.
This one step catches more layout mistakes than any other, because an outlet is only useful if something is not standing in front of it.
List the appliances in each room, including the ones permanently plugged in and the ones brought out occasionally for a specific task.
Occasional appliances are the ones forgotten, and they are why a room with adequate provision still ends up with a trailing lead.
Note which outlets would end up behind fitted furniture, an island or a built-in wardrobe, and therefore become unreachable once installed.
Fitted joinery is designed after the electrical layout in most projects, which is exactly how this conflict keeps happening.
Write down where things are charged overnight, including bedside positions, hallway tables and wherever the household actually leaves devices.
Charging positions are a modern habit that older layouts never anticipated, and they are consistently left off the list.
Consider the places you clean, since cleaning equipment needs an outlet within reach of the far corner of a room, a landing and the stairs.
Stairs and long hallways are the classic gap, and the fix is trivial before first fix and awkward afterwards.
Note any proposed position close to a sink, a bath, a shower or an external door, and put each one to a registered electrician as a question.
Positions near water, in bathrooms or outdoors are governed by requirements that only a registered electrician can apply; never settle these yourself.
4.Switching: entering, crossing and leaving a room
Switching is about movement through the house. Trace the routes people take, particularly at night, and control follows from that.
Note every route people take through the house at night, and mark where you would want to control the light from at each end of that route.
Routes reveal the need for control at both ends far more reliably than looking at rooms one at a time.
Write down which rooms have two entrances, and decide whether both genuinely need switching or whether one is rarely used.
Deciding this yourself avoids both the irritation of a single switch and the clutter of controls nobody needs.
Record where a switch would end up behind an opening door, since the door swing decides this and plans often do not show which way it opens.
It is one of the most common and most avoidable errors, and it is visible the moment somebody draws the swing properly.
Ask how many separate switches would appear on each plate, and consider honestly whether anybody would remember which one does what.
Plates with many identical switches get used by trial and error for the entire life of the house.
Note where you would want to control outside lighting from, including whether it should be reachable from a bedroom or only at the door.
Outside lighting control is decided late and badly, usually ending up somewhere nobody wants to walk to at night.
5.Lighting layers and what each one is actually for
Deciding what light is for comes before deciding what fitting provides it. Describe the tasks and the mood you want, room by room.
Write down for each room which tasks need light and exactly where those tasks happen, before considering any particular type of fitting.
Task positions determine everything else, and skipping this step is how rooms end up evenly lit and unusable in the places that matter.
Note where light would fall on a work surface if it came from a ceiling behind you, since your own shadow is the most common lighting complaint.
Kitchens, desks and dressing areas all suffer from this, and it is fully predictable from where somebody stands.
Record which rooms you want bright, which you want soft in the evening, and which need to do both at different times of day.
A room needing both is a different design problem from one needing either, and stating it early changes the approach.
Consider where a fitting would shine directly into somebody's eyes when they are lying in bed, reclining or sitting in a favourite chair.
Glare is judged from the position people occupy, not from standing in the middle of the room during a site visit.
Note whether any fitting would sit above a stair, a double-height void or another place that would be awkward to reach for changing a lamp.
A fitting nobody can reach becomes a permanent dark spot the first time it fails, and the position is chosen now.
Ask how dimming and control arrangements interact with the fittings being considered, and whether the two have to be decided at the same time.
Control and fitting choices constrain each other, and deciding them separately is how a dimmer ends up behaving badly.
6.Data, aerials, doorbells and the low-voltage clutter
The cabling that is not power gets discussed last and installed worst. Decide what should be provided while the walls are still open.
Write down where the incoming telecoms service enters the building and where the router currently sits in relation to it.
That entry point constrains a lot of later decisions, and it is often in the least convenient corner of the house.
Note which rooms are used for work or study and where a wired connection would be wanted rather than relied on wirelessly.
Home working patterns have changed what people need from a house, and layouts drawn from habit tend not to reflect that.
Record where televisions, aerials and speakers would go, and how cables would reach them without crossing the middle of a room.
Cable routes for screens are almost always solved after decoration, which is the worst possible moment to solve them.
Note where a doorbell, intercom or camera would need a connection, and where in the house you would want to answer or view it from.
Cameras and recording devices raise considerations about neighbours and privacy; confirm what applies locally before installing anything of the kind.
Ask what is worth providing now even if it will not be used immediately, since adding a cable later means opening finished surfaces.
The asymmetry between doing it now and doing it later is the entire argument, and it is worth having the conversation deliberately.
7.Outside, the garden and any outbuilding
External provision is nearly always an afterthought and nearly always regretted. Decide what happens beyond the walls at the same time as inside.
Note where you would want light outside, including at each door, along the path, at the bin store and at the parking or turning area.
Walking the route in the dark yourself is the only reliable way to find the places that actually need it.
Write down whether any shed, garage, studio or outbuilding would need a supply, and what would realistically be used inside it.
Intended use drives the whole conversation, and owners often understate it because the building is currently just storage.
Ask a registered electrician what applies to outdoor and outbuilding installations on this property, and record what you are told.
Outdoor and outbuilding installations are governed by requirements that only an appropriately registered person can apply to your situation.
Record where an external outlet would be needed, including for garden tools, cleaning equipment and anything charged outdoors.
Without one, the practical alternative is a lead through a window, which is exactly the situation to design out.
Note where light from an external fitting would fall onto a neighbour's window or garden, and consider that before positions are fixed.
Light spill is a common source of neighbour friction and is entirely predictable from where a fitting is aimed.
8.Chases, first fix and the point of no return
Electrical layouts stop being adjustable at a specific moment. Know when that is and make sure you have walked the site before it arrives.
Ask at what point positions become effectively fixed, since chased walls, poured floors and boarded ceilings end the conversation.
Owners often assume there is more flexibility than there is, and that moment is rarely stated unless somebody asks about it.
Write down how a change would be requested and recorded after first fix, and who has to agree to it before anything is moved.
Having the process agreed in advance keeps a late change orderly rather than turning it into an argument on site.
Ask to walk the site with every position marked on the wall before anything is cut, and take the household members who use those rooms.
Marked positions on a real wall reveal problems that no plan ever shows, and this is the last easy opportunity to find them.
Photograph every wall and floor with cables in place before they are covered, working room by room and keeping the images with your records.
You will want to know what is behind a wall before drilling into it for years to come, and nobody else will keep that record.
Ask what documentation you should receive for the completed installation and who is responsible for issuing it.
Testing and documentation of an electrical installation must be carried out by an appropriately registered person; confirm what applies rather than assuming.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A rough plan of each room with furniture drawn at approximate size
- Photographs of the existing consumer unit, meter and circuit labelling
- Any documentation from previous electrical work on the property
- A list of appliances used in each room, including occasional ones
- Notes on where extension leads are currently in use and what they power
- Details of the incoming telecoms service and current router position
Records

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Where furniture will stand in each room, since outlets follow from it
- Which rooms need light control from more than one position
- Which rooms must be capable of both bright and soft evening light
- What provision is made now for use that is expected only later
- Which outbuildings and external areas are within the scope of the work
- Who from the household attends the walk-through before walls are cut

- What applies to the outbuilding supply and the external outlets I have marked?
- What should I provide now that would be disruptive to add later?
- What documentation should I expect for the completed installation, and from whom?

Commonly overlooked items
- Sockets that end up permanently hidden behind fitted wardrobes or an island
- The switch that sits behind the door once it is opened fully
- No outlet within reach of the stairs or the far end of a long hallway
- Overnight charging positions at bedsides and in the hallway
- A ceiling fitting above a stairwell that nobody can ever reach
- Cable routes to a wall-mounted screen, solved after decorating
- External lighting aimed straight at a neighbour's bedroom window
