What panel adhesive is
These are not panels but the materials that hold panels together, and they belong in this category because almost every board in it depends on one. The main families used in joinery are emulsion wood glues that set as water leaves the joint, contact adhesives that bond two coated surfaces on touch, reactive types such as polyurethane that cure with moisture, and hot melts used in the machines that apply edge banding.
They are a different thing from the sealants and board bonding compounds sold nearby. A gap filling sealant is designed to stay flexible in a joint that moves, and a bonding compound is dabbed onto masonry to hold a lining board off a wall. Joinery adhesives are chosen instead to make a rigid, close fitting joint, and what that joint turns out to be follows from the fit and the contact between the two surfaces rather than from anything the adhesive can supply on its own.
That last point explains almost every failure. The bond depends on clean, well fitted, properly prepared surfaces held under steady pressure while the adhesive does its work, and on the joint being assembled within the working time the product allows. None of that is a question of how much is applied. Where a joint will meet moisture, or where a laminate is being bonded to a faced board, compatibility and exposure ratings must come from the adhesive maker's own documentation.

- Faced boards, oily timbers and plastics all present surfaces that adhesives behave differently on, so the substrate is part of the adhesive selection rather than an afterthought.
- Appearance
- Glue lines can show through a thin veneer or at a visible joint, and some products stain certain timbers, so trial joints are worthwhile on show work.
- Repairability
- A glued joint is meant to be permanent, so dismantling later usually damages the components; parts that may need to come apart should be fixed mechanically instead.

- Working time, clamping requirements, exposure ratings and the substrates a product is confirmed for are all found only in the adhesive maker's own literature.
