Overview

What concrete kerb & edging is

Precast concrete kerb and edging units are moulded lengths of concrete set on a bed and haunched from behind, forming the edge of a road, drive, path, parking area or planted area. They are made in a mould in a factory, cured under controlled conditions and delivered ready to lay, which is what distinguishes them from an edge cast in place and from a worked natural stone unit.

The mould is the reason the format has its own entry. Because the shape is repeatable, the family is a range rather than a single item: square-faced and bullnosed edgings, half-battered and splayed kerb faces that meet a vehicle wheel differently, channel blocks that carry water alongside the kerb line, dropped and transition units that take a kerb line down to a crossing, radius units cast to a set of curves so a bend can be built from stock, and quadrant units for corners. A worked stone unit can be made to any of these shapes, but only one at a time and by cutting; a moulded range makes the whole vocabulary an ordering decision.

The unit's job is restraint. A paved surface pushes sideways under traffic and under its own settlement, and the kerb or edging is what stops it spreading. That means the unit is only as good as what is behind and beneath it: a bed of concrete or mortar, a haunch of concrete against the back face, and a compacted foundation under both. A kerb laid without the haunch behind it will move, and when it moves the surface it was restraining follows.

The other thing a moulded unit brings with it is its behaviour when damaged. A concrete unit that takes a knock breaks with a light, granular fracture that shows against the weathered face, and matching a replacement into an aged run is a real difficulty because the units have weathered and the new one has not. Stone chips differently and weathers differently, which is one of the reasons the two are kept as separate entries rather than treated as one product in two materials.

Substrate dependency
The bed beneath and the haunch behind are what make the unit work, and both sit on a compacted foundation. A unit laid on a thin bed or without a proper back haunch will move, taking the surface it restrains with it.
Installation dependency
Units are laid to a line and a level, with joints set out, and the concrete bed and haunch placed as the run proceeds. Alignment errors are visible along the whole length in a way they are not in a paved field.
Surface wear
Kerb faces take wheel contact, scraping and impact from vehicles, and channel inverts take grit and flowing water. The exposed arris is the part that shows wear first.
Weathering and exposure
Units weather, stain and lighten in service, and freeze-thaw conditions and de-icing salts act on the exposed face. How a particular unit behaves depends on the product and on the drainage around it.
Appearance
A moulded unit is deliberately uniform, which is its advantage in a long run and its disadvantage where the setting calls for the variation of worked stone. Colour also varies between production batches.
Repairability
A damaged unit can usually be replaced individually, but replacement means breaking out the haunch and the bed, and a new unit rarely matches a weathered run.
Moisture behaviour
Where the kerb line is also carrying water, falls, gully positions and the invert of the channel decide whether water goes where it is intended to.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • A compacted foundation beneath the bed is part of the installation rather than a separate groundworks item.
  • The concrete bed and the back haunch are placed together with the unit and determine whether it stays put.
  • The surfacing alongside is laid up to the unit, so the two are set out and levelled together.
  • Gullies, channels and drainage connections along the run are positioned as part of the same setting out.
  • Where the run passes a crossing, transition units are ordered in advance for the change in height.
  • Radius units are ordered to the curve being built, so the geometry is settled before the order goes in.

  • Units are uniform by design, and the run reads as a machine-made line rather than a worked one.
  • Colour varies between production batches, so a later extension is unlikely to match an existing run exactly.
  • Face options — smooth moulded, textured, exposed aggregate — change the character of the edge considerably.
  • The line itself is what the eye follows, so alignment and joint consistency matter more than the individual unit.
  • A chipped arris on a moulded unit shows as a pale break against a weathered face.
  • Where a scheme mixes concrete and stone kerbs, the junction between the two is a detail worth agreeing.

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Setting out of the line, the levels and the radii happens before units are ordered, not after they arrive.
  • Units are heavy enough that handling arrangements are a genuine site consideration.
  • The bed and haunch concrete needs to be placed and protected as the run proceeds.
  • Traffic across a newly laid run before the haunch has gained strength is a common source of movement.
  • Cutting units on site is possible but produces a face unlike the moulded one, so stock profiles are preferred.
  • Weather affects the bedding and haunching concrete in the same way as any site-placed concrete.
