What enamelled lava stone is
Enamelled lava stone begins as a quarried volcanic rock, sawn into slabs in the way any dimension stone is. It then goes through a second and entirely different process: a ceramic glaze is applied to the face and the slab is fired in a kiln until that glaze vitrifies and fuses to the stone beneath. What the finished surface presents is therefore fired ceramic carried on a stone body.
This is what separates it from basalt used as dimension stone. Basalt is worked and installed as it comes from the ground, with its own unglazed and comparatively open surface, and its colour is whatever the rock happens to be. On an enamelled slab the visible layer is not rock at all, which is why saturated colours exist that no quarry produces, and why the slab is cut, handled and made good as a fired ceramic product rather than as stone.
The glaze normally develops a fine network of crazing lines, which is part of the intended appearance rather than a fault, though what it means for cleaning is worth raising with the supplier. Because the glaze is fired to the slab as made, cut-outs, edges and sizes are settled before firing, since cutting a fired slab afterwards opens the raw stone beneath the enamel. - Appearance
- The glaze gives colours and a depth that quarried stone does not, and the crazing is visible on close inspection. Colour and crazing vary between slabs and between firings, so slabs from one order can differ noticeably from a sample.
- Surface wear
- A vitrified glaze is hard but it is a coating over a stone body, and edges and corners are where impact tells. A chip goes through the enamel and shows the stone, which is a different kind of damage from a scratch on a homogeneous material.
- Repairability
- There is no way to re-fire a fitted slab, so damage to the glaze is made good with a filled repair or lived with. Understanding this before ordering matters more here than with materials that can be honed or sanded in place.
- Moisture behaviour
- The fired face is closed, but the crazing lines, the cut edges and the underside are not the same thing as the face. How the fabricator treats edges, cut-outs and junctions is what determines behaviour around a sink.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning follows the maker's instructions for that glaze, and abrasive pads and strong products are the usual exclusions. Whether any residue settles into the crazing over time is a question to put to the supplier.

- Slabs arrive finished, so templating, cut-out positions and edge treatment are fixed at drawing stage and cannot be revised on the day. Access, handling and level support all have to be arranged before delivery.
