Overview
What porcelain tile is
Porcelain tile is a fired clay tile pressed from a finely milled body, typically clays blended with feldspar and other minerals, and fired at a higher temperature than ordinary ceramic tile. The result is a denser, more closely vitrified body that takes up considerably less water and therefore behaves differently in wet and freeze-prone conditions.
Porcelain is sold in two broad forms and the difference matters in use. Glazed porcelain carries a decorated surface layer over a body of a different colour, so a deep chip exposes the paler material beneath. Full-body or through-body porcelain carries its colour and pattern through the whole tile, so chips and worn edges read far less obviously, which is why it comes up in discussions about heavily used floors.
Surface treatment varies widely: polished, honed, matt, structured and textured faces are all produced from the same kind of body, and they behave differently underfoot, under lighting and under cleaning. The tile is only one part of the finished surface, because the substrate, the bedding, the movement provision and the jointing all have to suit each other and the room.

- Moisture behaviour
- Porcelain bodies are fired dense and generally take up far less water than ceramic ones, which is why the two families are discussed differently for wet and external work. Whether a particular product suits a given exposure is a matter for its own documentation.
- Surface wear
- Wear shows differently on glazed and full-body products. A glaze can be worn through or chipped to reveal a paler body, whereas through-body colour keeps damage less visible. Polished faces also show scuffing and marking sooner than matt ones.
- Substrate dependency
- The tile is unforgiving of a base that moves. Deflection in a timber floor, a screed still drying, or a poorly prepared wall can produce hollow tiles, cracked joints or debonding regardless of how good the tile itself is.
- Thermal behaviour
- Porcelain conducts heat readily and feels cool underfoot, which is part of why it is discussed alongside underfloor heating. Whether a particular tile and bedding combination is documented for heated floors should be confirmed for the actual products.
- Installation dependency
- Large-format and thin porcelain need different handling, cutting and bedding practice from small tiles, and the flatness of the base becomes far more visible. This is skilled work and the outcome depends heavily on the installer.
- Appearance
- Digitally printed faces can imitate timber, stone and concrete convincingly, but the number of distinct printed faces in a range determines how often a pattern repeats across a large floor.
- Maintenance
- Routine care is usually straightforward, but joints, edges and any polished surfaces need more attention than the tile face itself. Cleaning products and any surface treatment follow the maker's own guidance for that range.
- Documentation
- Because ranges vary so much, the product's own technical sheet, covering intended locations, surface finish and any external or heated-floor use, is what governs, rather than general statements about porcelain as a family.

- The stiffness and movement of the base deck govern whether a rigid tiled surface stays intact over time.
- Screeds, renders and concrete bases have to be dry and stable enough before tiling begins, which is a programme matter.
- A separate movement strategy through the tiled field, at perimeters and at changes of plane is a design decision for others.
- In wet areas, any layer intended to manage water sits behind the tile and is designed and installed as its own element.
- Where boards form the base, the board type, its fixings and the joint treatment all influence the finished surface.

- Shade and calibration can vary between production batches, so ordering one area from one batch is normally discussed.
- Rectified edges give tighter joints than pressed edges, which changes the character of a whole tiled field.
