What granite is
Granite is an igneous rock formed as molten material cooled slowly deep in the earth, producing an interlocking mosaic of quartz, feldspar and mica crystals. That crystalline structure gives the stone its visible speckle and is the reason it is hard and generally resistant to scratching in everyday use.
In the trade the word granite is used loosely. Slabs sold as granite may be true granite or a related igneous stone such as gabbro or dolerite, both usually darker; gabbro is coarse grained like granite itself, while dolerite is the finer grained of the two. What matters practically is that these are silicate stones rather than carbonates, so they do not etch when acidic liquids such as lemon juice, vinegar or wine are spilled on them. That is the behaviour which separates them most clearly from marble and limestone.
Granite is supplied as large sawn slabs and as calibrated tiles, with finishes ranging from mirror polished through honed to flamed and brushed. Polishing brings out the colour of the crystals and makes the surface reflective, while flaming roughens it by thermal shock and is more often seen on external work.

- Surface wear

- Granite is dense but not without porosity, and lighter, more open slabs can take up oils and coloured liquids. Whether a surface treatment is used depends on the specific slab and on the supplier's guidance for it.
- Weathering and exposure
- As a silicate stone, granite copes with acidic rainfall better than carbonates, which is part of why it appears on external steps and kerbs. Long-term behaviour still depends on the particular stone and the exposure.
- Appearance
- The speckled, crystalline figure is the stone's signature. Slabs from one quarry vary in ground colour and crystal size, so slab layout for worktops is decided by looking at the actual slabs rather than a sample.
- Repairability
- Chips at edges and cut-outs can sometimes be filled by a specialist, and honed surfaces can be locally refinished, but a repair to a polished granite face is difficult to make invisible.
- Installation dependency
- Slab work is templated, cut and polished off site and delivered as finished pieces, so access, handling and the accuracy of the template determine the result far more than any adjustment on site.
