Overview
What basalt is
Basalt is an extrusive igneous rock: a magnesium and iron rich lava that cooled quickly at the surface, so its plagioclase and pyroxene crystals are far too small to pick out by eye. Gas escaping from the cooling melt can leave vesicles, the small rounded pores that give many basalts their pitted, matt character, and these are sometimes filled at the factory.
Granite, the stone it is most often shortlisted against, is an intrusive rock that cooled slowly at depth, which is why quartz, feldspar and mica grew into the coarse visible crystals that make granite read as speckled. Basalt cooled fast, so it reads as uniform and close to monochrome. The trade also sells related fine grained dark rocks such as dolerite and andesite under the basalt name, which is worth clarifying.
Both are silicates, so neither is etched by household acids in the way a carbonate stone is. The real differences are practical. The vesicles can hold water, dirt and staining liquids, so an unfilled basalt behaves as a more absorbent surface than its dense appearance suggests, and a honed dark face shows water marks, dust and wear far more readily than a flamed or bush hammered one.

- A honed dark surface shows scuffing and polish from foot traffic as a change in sheen rather than as loss of material, which is why circulation routes gradually look different from the rest of the floor.
- Weathering and exposure
- Some dark igneous stones lighten or take on a greyer cast with prolonged sun and weathering. Ask the supplier what they have observed with the specific quarry material rather than assuming stability.
- Installation dependency
- Fine grained stone cuts cleanly but is unforgiving of poor setting out, because the even colour draws the eye straight to any lipping, uneven joint or misaligned edge.
