What stone cladding is
Stone cladding covers a family of products that share an appearance rather than a construction. At one end are sawn slabs of natural stone, cut from a block and mechanically fixed back to a structure with cramps, dowels or undercut anchors on a support system. At the other are thin stone slips and cast facings bedded onto a backing with adhesive or mortar, more closely related to tiling than to masonry.
The critical distinction is structural role. Solid stonework, whether traditional walling or dressed blocks, is the wall: it carries load, has depth, and its own bedding and jointing do the work. A stone veneer carries nothing but itself, and everything about it depends on whatever holds it to the building. Two elevations can look almost identical and be entirely different pieces of construction behind the face.
Because a veneer is thin, the stone's own character is only part of the story. The porosity of the particular stone, how it takes up water and releases it, whether it is prone to staining from the fixings or the bedding behind, and how it behaves through freezing weather all become live questions. Cast and reconstituted stone products introduce a further difference again, since their colour and texture come from a manufactured mix rather than from a quarried bed.
