Overview
What natural stone tile is
Natural stone tile is quarried rock sawn into slabs and then cut, calibrated and finished into tiles or larger pieces. Unlike a fired or pressed tile it is not manufactured to a recipe: its density, porosity, colour and internal structure come from how the rock formed, and they vary within a quarry and between blocks.
The stones used in buildings fall into broad geological families that behave very differently from one another. Igneous stones such as granite are generally hard and tolerant of acids. Metamorphosed carbonates such as marble are softer and react with acids. Sedimentary carbonates such as limestone are softer again and often more open in structure. Slate is a metamorphic stone that splits along its cleavage planes.
Because stone is a natural product, variation is part of it. Veining, fossils, colour banding and natural fissures appear across a delivery, and finishes such as polished, honed, brushed, tumbled, riven and flamed change both the look and the way the surface behaves. Using stone in a building is a decision about one particular stone from one particular source, never about stone in general.

- Moisture behaviour
- Porosity varies enormously between stones and even between blocks from one quarry. A more open stone takes up water and staining agents more readily, which affects where it is considered and how it is looked after.
- Weathering and exposure
- Outdoors, stone weathers according to its mineralogy and its finish. Carbonates dull and etch in acidic rain, iron-bearing stones can stain, and open-textured material is tested hardest by freezing conditions.
- Appearance
- Veining, fossil traces, colour banding and tonal shifts are inherent to the material. Dry-laying a delivery before fixing is the normal way of controlling how all that variation reads across a floor.
- Surface wear
- Softer stones scratch and burnish where traffic concentrates, following the lines people actually walk. Polished finishes show that change sooner and more obviously than honed or textured ones.
- Repairability
- Unlike a glazed tile, many stones can be locally honed, filled or refinished by a specialist, which changes how damage is dealt with over the life of a surface.
- Maintenance
- Most stones are given some form of surface treatment after installation, and the supplier's own guidance for that stone governs what is used and when it is done.
- Substrate dependency
- Stone amplifies problems in the base. A floor that moves, an uneven screed, or a wall that cannot carry the weight will show up as cracked joints or loose units regardless of the quality of the stone.
- Documentation
- The quarry or supplier's technical information for the exact stone and finish is what governs use, because two stones sold under similar trade descriptions can behave very differently in the same position.

- What will regularly be spilled on this surface, and is the stone under discussion a carbonate?
- Is the position exposed to frost, and what does the supplier say about that stone outdoors?
- How much sunlight falls on the surface, and could the colour change over a long period?
- Is the area walked on with outdoor grit, and is there matting to catch it beforehand?
- Is the stone going into a room that generates a great deal of steam?

Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Floor stiffness and deflection govern whether a stone floor stays sound over the years.
- Weight is a real consideration on upper floors and on walls, and is a matter for a professional.
- Some stones are sensitive to staining and moisture coming from the bedding materials behind them.
- Movement provision across the field and at the perimeters has to be planned before laying starts.
- External stone depends on the base build-up, the drainage and the falls, which are design matters for others.
- Fixings and anchors for stone on a wall are engineering decisions rather than a tiling decision.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Polished, honed, brushed, tumbled and riven finishes read as different materials from the same stone.
- Natural fissures and fossil voids are characteristics of the stone rather than defects in the delivery.
- Blocks cut in different directions produce very different figuring, which is why cutting direction is discussed.
