What lime render is
Lime render is a coating of lime binder and sand, sometimes with animal hair or another fibre included in the coarser coats. The binders themselves differ: non-hydraulic limes, supplied as putty, set slowly by reacting with air, while natural hydraulic limes contain constituents that allow a set to begin in the presence of water and generally produce a firmer coating. These are not interchangeable materials, and choosing between them is specialist territory.
The reason lime is used is compatibility rather than nostalgia. Older solid walls, without a cavity and often built with lime mortar, handle moisture by absorbing it and releasing it again through the fabric. A soft, comparatively vapour-open lime coating allows that to continue and tends to accommodate small movements by distributing fine cracks rather than concentrating them. A hard, dense cement coating over the same wall can trap moisture behind it and push damage into the masonry it was meant to protect.
Lime is also, by design, somewhat sacrificial. It is intended to be the layer that weathers and is renewed, protecting the wall behind it. Work proceeds in thin coats applied over time rather than in one operation, each coat needs protection from rain, frost and drying sun while it cures, and the seasons in which work can sensibly be carried out are limited. Any decorative coating applied over it needs to be vapour-open too, which is why limewash and mineral paints are the traditional companions and why ordinary impermeable exterior paints defeat the purpose.

- Lime coatings are comparatively vapour-open, allowing moisture to move out through the coating rather than being held behind it. That behaviour is why they are associated with traditional walls and why the paint over them matters so much.
- Repairability
- Lime work is repairable in a way hard coatings are not: local areas can be cut out and made good, and fine surface cracking is often accepted and worked with rather than treated as failure.
- Installation dependency
- Work proceeds in thin coats over an extended period, with each coat protected from rain, frost and rapid drying while it cures. This has real programme consequences and limits the seasons in which work is sensible.
- Appearance
- The finished surface is softer in modelling than a machine-applied render and usually follows the irregularity of the wall beneath rather than flattening it, which is generally the intention on an older building.

- Different limes behave differently, so specifying lime alone says much less than it appears to.
