What silicone resin paint is
Silicone resin emulsion paint is a water carried facade coating whose binder is a silicone resin held together with mineral fillers. Rather than forming a closed skin across the surface, the resin lines the walls of the pores it is applied over. Liquid water is repelled at the face while water vapour can still move outwards through the coating, and that combination is the reason the binder is used on masonry at all.
The comparison that matters is with the mineral silicate paint already in this library. Silicate paint bonds chemically to a mineral background, silicifying with it, which is why it needs that kind of substrate and cannot simply be applied over anything. Silicone resin paint bonds physically, in the way an emulsion does, so it can be used on backgrounds and over sound existing coatings that silicate paint cannot chemically bind to, while still keeping a comparatively vapour open film.
It also differs from ordinary acrylic masonry paint, which forms a tighter, more continuous film and is generally less water repellent at the face. The awkward part of the category is that most products sold under this description carry an organic co-binder alongside the silicone resin, and the proportion varies enormously between them, so the same description can cover finishes that behave quite differently.
