Overview

What paving bedding mortar is

Two related families of material sit in a paved surface. The bedding is what the unit is laid on: either a mortar bed formed on a prepared base, sometimes with a bonding slurry applied to the underside of the unit, or a granular laying course used where the construction is intended to stay flexible. The jointing is what fills the gaps between units: brushed-in cementitious or resin-based compounds, mortar worked into the joint, or kiln-dried sand in flexible paving.

Neither is interior tile adhesive, and the differences matter. Tiling adhesive is a thin-bed material applied with a notched trowel to a flat, dry, sheltered substrate at a controlled temperature, and the tile is held in a building that stays roughly at room temperature. External bedding sits on a granular base, is soaked by rain, freezes and thaws, and takes vehicle or foot traffic directly. The materials, the way the bed is formed and the job the joint has to do are all different in kind, not just in degree.

It is equally distinct from walling mortar. A masonry mortar joins units in a vertical assembly, works largely in compression, and is judged on how it behaves alongside the brick or block it bonds. A paving joint is horizontal, holds water, takes abrasion from feet and tyres, and is what usually fails first in a paved area. Which combination of bedding and jointing suits a given paving unit, traffic and drainage strategy is a design decision, and this reference deliberately does not set out mixes, proportions or joint dimensions.

Substrate dependency
The bed is only as good as what it sits on. A mortar bed over an inadequate or poorly compacted base transfers the problem upwards, and no jointing material corrects movement originating below.
Installation dependency
Full and continuous bedding is the single most important workmanship issue in paving. Units laid on separated dabs leave voids that fill with water, and those voids are invisible once the area looks finished.
Moisture behaviour
Paving joints are wet for long periods and water moves through and under the surface. Whether the construction is intended to shed water at the surface or let it pass through determines which materials belong in it.
Weathering and exposure
External beds and joints are cycled through wetting, drying and freezing throughout their life. How a particular product behaves under those conditions is set out by its maker, and it is the main reason interior materials do not belong outdoors.
Appearance
Joint colour occupies a surprising proportion of a paved area's visible surface, and some jointing materials can stain porous stone at the arris. Sample panels are the only reliable way to see the combination.
Maintenance
Joints are the consumable part of paving. They erode, they grow weeds and algae where they are open, and they are what a maintenance programme actually has to address.
Documentation
Ask for the maker's data sheet and application guidance for the exact product, its position on the paving unit being used, and any weather limitations it places on application.

  • Is the paving exposed to frost while saturated, and what does the product's maker say about that?
  • Will de-icing salts or garden chemicals reach the joints during the year?
  • How much shade does the area have, and is weed and algae growth in the joints likely?
  • What is the weather window for the works, and does it fall within what the product allows?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The sub-base and its compaction determine whether the bed above it stays supported over time.
  • The choice of a rigid or a flexible construction dictates which bedding and jointing materials belong.
  • Edge restraint holds a paved area together, and joints alone will not do that job.
  • Falls and drainage outlets are set before laying, since a jointed surface changes how water leaves the area.
  • The paving unit itself influences the choice, because porous and reactive stones react to some jointing materials.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Joint colour is chosen against the paving unit, and it looks different wet from how it looks dry.
  • Joint width is a design decision that affects both appearance and how the joint is filled.
  • Residue left on the face of a unit during jointing can be very hard to remove afterwards.

  • Is the bed continuous, and how will that be verified before the area is signed off?
  • How would a hollow or drummy unit be identified after completion?

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • How are joints inspected, and what is the plan when they begin to erode?
  • Can individual units be lifted and rebedded, or does the construction make that difficult?
  • What cleaning methods does the jointing material's maker accept?
  • Who is responsible for keeping weeds and algae out of the joints?
  • Is any of the original jointing material being kept for small repairs?

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Interior tiling habits get carried outdoors, where the exposure is completely different.
  • Joints, not units, are what an owner will be maintaining for the life of the paving.
  • Staining from a jointing material on porous stone is usually discovered after the whole area is done.
  • The paving unit maker and the jointing maker often have different views, and nobody compares the two.
