Overview
What quartzite is
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock formed when a quartz sandstone is heated and compressed until the original grains and their cement recrystallise into an interlocking mass. The test geologists use is how it breaks: a fracture runs straight through the grains rather than around them, which is what separates true quartzite from the quartzitic sandstone it grades into.
The confusion this entry exists to settle is with engineered quartz surfacing. That material is manufactured, a composite of crushed quartz held in a polymer resin, uniform by design and consistent from slab to slab. Quartzite is quarried, varies from slab to slab, contains no polymer binder, and its veining is a record of geology rather than a pattern arranged or printed during production.
Because quartz is a silicate, genuine quartzite is not dulled by lemon juice or vinegar in the way calcite marble is, and that difference is often how a mislabelled slab is exposed. Mis-selling is common here: material sold as quartzite is sometimes dolomitic marble, and even genuine quartzite can carry seams of softer, more soluble minerals, so it is not automatically impervious and is frequently impregnated by fabricators.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Moisture behaviour
- Quartzite is a natural stone with real porosity that varies enormously between quarries, and hardness tells you nothing about it. Whether the fabricator intends to impregnate the surface, and with what, is a question worth asking early.
- Appearance
- Veining, banding and colour come from the parent sandstone and its metamorphic history, so no two slabs match. Slabs are usually selected in person at the yard rather than ordered from a sample.
- Surface wear
- Quartz is one of the harder common minerals, but a slab is not uniformly hard: softer mineral seams within it will show wear before the quartz rich body does.
- Maintenance
- Because it is a silicate, the acid etching that dulls marble is not the concern here. Staining through open porosity is, and that is what any impregnating treatment is intended to slow rather than prevent.
- Installation dependency
- Hard stone is slow to cut and hard on blades and polishing heads, which affects fabrication lead times and how cut outs, mitres and drainer grooves are approached.
- Documentation
- Ask the supplier to state the rock type in writing rather than accepting the marketing name on the slab rack, since mislabelling in this category is widespread.
- Repairability
- Chips at edges and cut outs can sometimes be filled, but a filled repair in veined natural stone is visible from certain angles, and re-polishing on site is not equivalent to factory finishing.

- Will the surface meet oils, wine, citrus or coffee regularly, and has an absorbency check been carried out on an offcut?
- Is any part of the installation exposed to direct sun that could highlight tonal differences between slabs?
- Will hot pans be set down on the surface, and what does the fabricator say about that for this particular material?
- Does the location involve standing water, such as around a sink or a bath, and how will that detail be formed?
- Is the material intended for external use, and has the supplier commented on that specific quarry material outdoors?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Worktop performance depends on level cabinets, continuous support beneath joints and adequate support to any overhang.
- Cut outs for sinks and hobs concentrate stress, so their radii and any strengthening are fabrication decisions taken in advance.
- Floor installations depend on substrate flatness, stiffness and moisture state assessed by the installer before bedding.
- Whether a given slab can be laid over underfloor heating depends on the product and the construction, and must be confirmed from its documentation.
- Wall panels rely wholly on the fixing method and the capacity of the backing to carry the weight of natural stone.

Appearance and finish considerations
- Polished, honed and leathered finishes change both the colour depth and how visible fingerprints and marks will be.
- Book matching consecutive slabs creates a mirrored pattern, which needs slab selection and layout agreed before cutting.
- Joint positions in a long run should be planned around the veining, not simply placed where the slab happened to end.
- Edge profiles reveal the internal structure of the stone, so the profile choice is part of the appearance decision.
- Under strong downlighting, translucent quartz rich areas can look different from the denser bands beside them.

- Has the rock type been confirmed independently of the trade name used on the slab, and by whom?
- What does an absorbency check on an offcut suggest about how this slab will behave in daily use?
- How will the fabricator handle any soft or fractured seams found when the slab is opened up?
- What support arrangement is proposed for spans, overhangs and the areas either side of a cut out?
- Service life depends on use, installation quality and upkeep, so what has the team assumed about each of them?
- How will the finished surface be protected while the rest of the installation is completed?

- What cleaning does the fabricator consider compatible with the finish supplied, and what do they warn against?
- If an impregnating treatment is applied, what does that product's documentation say about renewal and reapplication?
- Who holds the record of what treatment was used, so that a future owner is not guessing?
- If the surface is chipped at a cut out, what repair does the fabricator offer and how visible will it be?
- Has an offcut been retained, both for testing cleaning methods and for any future repair work?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- Slab selection at the yard should happen before templating, because the slab governs how joints and features are laid out.
- Templating on installed cabinets rather than from drawings avoids the accumulated errors that make joints open up.
- Access and lifting for heavy natural stone slabs need to be resolved with the fabricator before the delivery date.
- Any on site cutting produces silica dust, and how that is controlled is a matter for the contractor and their own procedures.
- Sealing and finishing steps, if any, follow the fabricator's sequence rather than being added by other trades.

- A written statement of the geological rock type of the material offered, not just the commercial slab name.

Commonly overlooked points
- Hardness and porosity are independent properties, so a stone that resists scratching can still absorb a spill readily.
- A great deal of material sold as quartzite is something else, and the seller may believe the name in good faith.
- Slab selection is the single decision with the most effect on the finished look, and it happens before any fabrication.
- The natural slab size sets the joint positions, so a long unbroken run may simply not be available in a chosen stone.
- Quartzite and engineered quartz sound alike in conversation, and orders have gone wrong over exactly that.
