Overview

What insulated board is

Insulated plasterboard laminate is a composite panel made in a factory, in which a gypsum plasterboard sheet and a rigid insulation core are bonded together into one board. It arrives on site as a single item with one face ready for finishing, and it is handled, cut, fixed and jointed as one lining rather than as two.

The distinction worth drawing is with building the same idea up on site from separate parts, where insulation is fixed first and boards are fixed over it. The laminate collapses that into one product with one fixing operation and one joint line. That changes handling, cutting and detailing, and it also removes the freedom to vary the two layers independently.

Cores differ between products, and different rigid insulants behave differently when cut, loaded or wetted, so two laminates that look alike on a merchant's rack are not interchangeable. Some products include an integral membrane layer and some do not, which is one of several reasons the whole build-up is a designed matter rather than a shelf choice.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.

Thermal behaviour
No thermal figure belongs on a reference page. What a lining achieves depends on the wall, the junctions and the calculation carried out for that specific building by the design team.
Moisture behaviour
Adding a lining changes how an existing wall dries. That is why a condensation risk assessment by a qualified professional sits ahead of any product choice, not after it.
Substrate dependency
The panel is only as sound as what it is fixed to. The condition, flatness and construction of the existing wall govern the fixing method and have to be established first.
Installation dependency
Panels are handled, cut and jointed as one item, so a cutting error wastes both layers, and joint and junction details have to be settled before work starts.
Appearance
The finished face is plasterboard, so the visible result is ordinary. The noticeable change is at reveals, skirtings and sills, which all come forward with the lining.
Repairability
A bonded panel cannot be repaired layer by layer. Damage usually means cutting out and replacing a panel area and then making the joints good again.
Documentation
Cores differ between products that look alike. The manufacturer's documentation for the exact panel, and its fixing guidance for the actual substrate, are the only reliable sources.

  • What is the existing wall made of, and how does it get wet and dry out at present?
  • Which elevation is this, and how exposed is it to driving rain and the prevailing weather?
  • Is the room a bathroom, kitchen or laundry where moisture is generated every day?
  • How is the room ventilated, and will that change once the lining is in place?
  • Are there unheated spaces on the other side of any of these walls?
  • Has anyone assessed how the wall will behave once its inner face has been insulated?

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Whether the panels are bonded directly to the wall or fixed to a frame, which is a designed decision with different consequences.
  • The condition and flatness of the existing wall face, since a bonded lining follows whatever it is fixed to.
  • How the lining meets floors, ceilings and party walls, because those junctions are designed rather than improvised.
  • What happens at window and door reveals, where the build-up has to reduce and the detail becomes critical.
  • Where existing services sit in or on the wall, because they may need moving before any lining goes up.
  • Whether any membrane forms part of the product as supplied or is a separate designed layer in the assembly.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • The visible face is a plasterboard face, so the finished appearance is that of a plasterboard wall rather than anything distinctive.
  • Joint lines fall where the panels fall, and joint treatment is what decides whether they show under raking light.
  • The lining brings the wall face forward, so skirtings, architraves, sills and sockets all have to be re-formed.
  • Reveals become deeper or are detailed down, which changes the proportions of a window as seen from inside the room.
  • Existing cornices and mouldings may have to be cut, extended or reinstated where a lining meets them.

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.

  • How does the chosen core behave if it is ever wetted, and what does the manufacturer's documentation say about that?
  • What happens where the lining is knocked in a hallway or a doorway, and how easily is such damage repaired?
  • How are fixings for shelves and radiators taken through the lining without crushing the core?
  • Is the fixing method documented for the substrate that is actually present behind the panel?
  • What behaviour is expected at junctions where movement between old and new work is likely?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Can a damaged panel be cut out and replaced without disturbing the panels around it?
  • Who holds the record of what the lining is made of once it is decorated and invisible?
  • How is a fixing added later without knowing where the core sits behind the board face?
  • What is the repair route if a joint cracks along a panel line?
  • Will future works such as rewiring mean opening the lining, and has that been anticipated?

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • The fixing method has to suit the actual substrate, which may only be confirmed by opening up.
  • Cutting produces insulation debris as well as board dust, which affects site protection and clean-up.
  • Panels are bulkier than plain boards and need handling and storage space planned in advance.
  • Sequencing with electrical and plumbing first fix has to be settled before the wall is closed.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • The lining moves the wall face into the room, and every fixed item on that wall has to move with it.
  • Reveals are where the build-up has to shrink, and where the detail is hardest and most often rushed.
  • Junctions with party walls, floors and internal walls carry straight on through the insulated line.
  • A bonded panel cannot be split into its layers on site, so a mistake in choice cannot be partly corrected.
  • Rooms feel different in use once lined, and expectations about that are worth setting honestly at the start.
