Overview

What insulating plaster is

Insulating plaster is a plaster or render in which the usual sand aggregate is replaced by a lightweight mineral or plant-derived one, commonly cork granules, expanded perlite, expanded clay or wood fibre, bound with lime, cement or a combination. The change of aggregate is the whole point: the coat that results is far lower in density than a conventional plaster.

That difference shows in how the material behaves. The coat is applied considerably thicker than a standard plaster, it is softer and more open, it is usually built up in successive passes rather than laid as a single skim, and it is normally completed with a separate finishing coat chosen for compatibility with it. It is not a conventional lime or gypsum plaster with something added to it.
