Arch Springer
Explains the springer as the transition between an arch and what carries it, which is where the arch's geometry is set and where its thrust arrives.

Overview
What a springer is
The springer is the unit an arch starts from. It sits at the top of the support on each side of an opening and presents the inclined face that the first voussoir bears against, so it establishes the angle at which the ring begins and therefore the shape the rest of the arch follows.
It is also where the arch stops being an arch. Everything the ring carries arrives at the springer as an inclined thrust and passes from there into the wall, pier or abutment below. That makes the springer the point at which the two structural ideas — a curved compression form and a vertical wall — have to be reconciled.

- It is not an ordinary voussoir. Every other voussoir bears on units of the ring either side of it; the springer bears on the support beneath as well, which is why it both sets the angle the ring starts at and delivers the ring's thrust into the wall.
- It is not a structural bearing. A bearing is a discrete component introduced between two elements to control how load passes between them; a springer is masonry belonging to the opening itself, and it sets the arch's geometry as well as transferring its thrust.
- It is not the abutment. The wall or pier beside the opening is what actually resists the outward thrust; the springer is the unit that delivers that thrust into it.

Commonly misunderstood
- That the springer is the decorative block at the side of an arch. Where such a block exists it is frequently the springer, but the position is defined by where the ring begins rather than by whether it is emphasised.
- That problems in an arch are located where the cracking appears. Distortion visible at the crown is often driven by what has happened at the springings, which are at the other end of the ring.
