Overview
What cast stone is
Cast stone is a manufactured product. Crushed stone aggregate, sand, cement, water and pigment are proportioned into a facing mix whose colour and grain are chosen to imitate a particular natural stone, and that mix is placed into moulds - either as a wet poured mix or as a semi-dry mix compacted into the mould - then demoulded, cured and finished. It is concrete, made to look like stone.
That is the distinction that matters most: cast stone is not natural stone. There is no quarry, no bed and no geology in it. Its colour comes from the aggregate and pigment the maker selected, and its surface comes from the mould together with post-cast treatments such as tooling, blasting or etching that imitate a dressed, rubbed or picked finish on a worked block. Units are judged on colour match, texture and consistency from one to the next.
It is also not the reconstituted or agglomerated stone surfacing covered elsewhere, which is a resin-bound slab material made for worktops and interior surfaces and sold by the sheet. Cast stone is a cementitious masonry unit made as cills, copings, quoins, string courses, door and window surrounds and balustrade components. Where the unit is a cill or a coping, the weathering geometry it depends on, meaning fall, projection, the drip worked into the underside and the stooled ends of a cill, is set out under stone copings and cills, which covers those same components in quarried stone.

- Efflorescence and lime bloom are recognised behaviours of cementitious units and are often at their most visible early on. Ask what the maker's position is and what should and should not be done about it.
- Installation dependency
- Units arrive heavy, moulded and in a fixed sequence, so handling, setting out and the order of the work all have to be planned. The bedding and jointing are the designer's decisions, not the supplier's default.
- Repairability
- A chipped arris on a moulded unit cannot be recut the way carved stone can, and patch repairs to a pigmented facing mix are difficult to conceal. Ask what the maker recommends and what replacement would involve.
- Documentation
- Because this is a manufactured product there is real documentation to ask for: the mix description, the finish, the batch arrangements, handling guidance and the maker's own statements about performance.

- Moulded units cannot be recut on site, so setting out errors turn into reordering rather than into a morning's trimming.
- Colour is agreed against a sample, and without a retained sample there is no reference against which to judge what turns up.
- The detail around the unit, not the unit itself, is usually what decides how the wall behaves and how the unit looks in a few years.
