What clay facing brick is
Facing bricks are units formed from clay or shale, dried and then fired in a kiln until the clay body becomes a stable ceramic. Colour comes mainly from the minerals in the clay and from the conditions inside the kiln rather than from any applied coating, which is why a facing brick weathers as a solid body rather than as a surface layer that can wear through.
Forming method drives much of the character. Extruded and wire-cut bricks tend to be regular and consistent; soft-mud and moulded bricks pick up a sanded, creased face and a looser edge; handmade bricks vary noticeably from unit to unit. That variation is part of the point of the material, which is why a sample panel says far more than a single brick.
The distinction from engineering brick is worth stating plainly. Facing bricks are selected first for appearance, and their water absorption and frost behaviour vary widely between products. Engineering bricks are made denser and are turned to where low absorption is the governing concern. Where a facing brick sits in a severe position, its own documented characteristics have to be checked against that exposure.

- Colour and texture come from the clay body and from firing, so batches vary. Blending across several packs during laying is what stops banding, and a sample panel built on site is the only reliable way to judge a blend.
- Weathering and exposure
- Exposed brickwork changes with time. Some faces darken, some lighten, and rain-washed elevations weather differently from sheltered ones. Weathering behaviour varies by product and is worth discussing before selection.
- Moisture behaviour
- Water absorption differs substantially between facing bricks, and it interacts with frost. Where a position is severe, the product's own documented behaviour matters more than any general statement about clay brick.
- Maintenance
- Brickwork is usually left uncoated, but joints, copings and flashings need attention. Repointing, dealing with organic growth and understanding efflorescence are the recurring items rather than the bricks themselves.
- Repairability
- Individual bricks can be cut out and replaced, which is a real advantage over monolithic finishes. The difficulty is matching an aged face with a new unit, and reclaimed or specially made bricks are sometimes used for that reason.
- Installation dependency
- The wall is only as good as the bedding and the perpends. Full joints, protection of new work from rain and frost, and consistent mortar batching all affect both appearance and later behaviour.
- Documentation
- Ask for the manufacturer's data on the specific brick, including its stated durability and salt characteristics, rather than relying on the general reputation of clay brick as a family of materials.

- How severe is the exposure on each elevation, and does any part of the wall stand clear so that it is wetted from more than one side?
- Is the site coastal, or is the wall likely to receive de-icing salts from a road, path or driveway?
- How much driving rain does the site take, and does that change what the outer leaf has to cope with?
- Are there positions in the design, such as copings and freestanding walls, where frost action will be at its most severe?
- Does ground water or splash-back at the base of the wall reach the brickwork, and how is that being handled?

Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Facing brickwork is one leaf of an assembly, and how it is tied, supported and drained is decided by the wall design rather than by the brick.
- Movement provisions in long runs of brickwork are a design matter, since clay units expand slightly over the long term after firing.
- Where brickwork is supported off a frame or a shelf angle, the support and its corrosion protection belong to the structural design.
- Openings, cavity trays and the way water reaching the cavity is dealt with all sit outside the brick itself.
- The mortar chosen has to suit the brick, because the relationship between the two governs how the wall behaves.

- Mortar colour and joint profile change the read of a facade as much as the brick does, and are worth sampling together.
- Bond pattern, special shaped units and soldier or header courses give texture without any change of material.
- Handmade and stock bricks carry size variation, which shows in the joint widths and is part of the intended character.
- Bricks from different production runs can differ noticeably, so blending and an agreed sample panel both matter.
- Cut faces on site expose the interior of the brick, which is often a different colour from the weathered face.

- How will the elevation look after weathering, and is that change acceptable to the owner?
- Are copings, sills and flashings doing their job, since most brickwork trouble starts where water is allowed to sit?
- Where the wall meets the ground, is there a change of unit or a protective detail at that point?
Upkeep
Maintenance and repair considerations
- How is repointing expected to be handled, and will the replacement mortar match the original in both colour and behaviour?
- Are spare bricks from the same batch being kept for later repairs and alterations?
- What cleaning methods are appropriate, given that aggressive cleaning can open the face of a brick and accelerate decay?
- Is efflorescence understood as a common early appearance that usually weathers off, rather than as a defect in itself?
- Who will inspect parapets, chimneys and freestanding walls, which weather far harder than the main elevation?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- Bricks should be drawn from several packs at once so that colour variation is spread across the whole elevation.
- New brickwork needs protecting from rain, frost and rapid drying while the mortar gains strength.
- Joints are struck to a chosen profile while the mortar is still workable, so the finish is decided during laying.
- Mortar batching consistency affects colour, so changes of sand or of mixing practice show up on the wall.
- Setting out and the position of openings are worked out before laying, because brickwork is unforgiving of adjustment later.

- Confirmation of any special shaped units ordered, since these usually carry longer lead times.
- Photographs of the agreed sample panel, retained as the reference for what was accepted.

- Bricks bought later rarely match, because clay sources and firing conditions drift between production runs.
- Cutting bricks for reveals and returns exposes a different internal colour that can look wrong on a fair face.
- Freestanding and retaining brickwork is a much harder duty than a house elevation and is often specified as though it were the same.
- A brick that looks right in a hand sample can read quite differently across a whole elevation.
