Overview
What microcement is
Microcement is a cement-based decorative coating applied in thin successive layers over a surface that already exists, normally with a bonding primer beneath it and a protective sealer over it. It is not cast into formwork and it is not a slab, so it adds very little thickness and contributes nothing that could be relied on structurally.
Because the layer is thin, it inherits the behaviour of whatever sits underneath. A screed that flexes, a board that deflects, tiling with hollow bedding, or a joint that opens and closes will tend to register at the surface, and existing cracks can telegraph through. Preparation - making the base sound, clean, flat and dimensionally stable - is the part of the work that decides the outcome, not the coating.
A typical build-up starts with a primer, then a body coat worked over a reinforcing mesh or scrim, then finer finishing coats trowelled to the chosen texture, then a sealer. The sealer rather than the cement layer is what deals with staining and everyday wear, which makes the sealer choice, and its periodic renewal, part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

- Substrate dependency
- The substrate is the single largest variable. Soundness, flatness, cleanliness, residual bond breakers such as old adhesive, and above all stiffness determine whether a thin coating stays intact, and each needs checking before any product is chosen.
- Moisture behaviour
- Moisture arriving from below, from a leaking detail, or from construction water still leaving a slab can disrupt bond and appearance. Whether an existing floor has effective moisture control is a question to settle before work starts, not afterwards.
- Appearance
- The finish is hand-trowelled, so cloudiness, trowel marks and shade variation are inherent to the material rather than defects. Sample panels prepared by the actual applicator, viewed in the room's own light, are the only reliable preview.
- Surface wear
- Day-to-day resistance to scuffing and staining comes mostly from the sealer, and sealers differ widely in feel, sheen and behaviour. How the surface will be used, and by whom, belongs in the conversation before a system is picked.
- Repairability
- Local repair is possible but rarely invisible, because a patch is a fresh trowelled area within an older one. The repair approach, and whether a whole bay would be reworked instead, is worth agreeing in advance rather than after the event.
- Maintenance
- Upkeep centres on cleaning products that do not attack the sealer, and on renewing the sealer periodically. Frequency varies by product, sealer type and traffic, and belongs in the manufacturer's own maintenance literature for the system used.
- Installation dependency
- Results depend heavily on the applicator's skill and on conditions during application and curing, including temperature and airflow. This is a trained-applicator finish rather than a general-purpose decorating product.

- Will the surface sit in a shower, in a splash zone, or simply in a room that occasionally gets wet?
- Is there any history of damp, condensation or leaks affecting the substrate that is being covered?
