Overview
What artificial grass is
Artificial grass is a textile in the way it is made. Yarns of polyethylene, polypropylene or nylon are tufted into a backing cloth and locked in place with a coating, then finished with drainage perforations. Yarn shapes differ, from single monofilament blades to fibrillated tape that splits into a mesh, and most products blend a longer green yarn with a shorter curled thatch to hold the pile upright.
It is grouped with carpet for that reason, but almost nothing an indoor carpet is judged by applies here. There is no underlay and no perimeter fixing strip, and the criteria are drainage, resistance to sunlight, the behaviour of any infill and the stability of the ground beneath. A synthetic lawn is laid on an engineered base, commonly compacted aggregate with a blinding layer and sometimes a resilient layer, with the turf seamed on jointing tape and secured at its edges.
The base is the part that determines how the surface performs and how long it stays flat. Water passes through the backing perforations and then relies entirely on the base and the ground to take it away, so drainage is designed rather than assumed. Sand or rubber infill, where used, weighs the turf down and supports the pile, and it migrates and needs attention over time. In direct sun these surfaces reach temperatures quite unlike living grass, which is a practical consideration in how an area is used.

- Substrate dependency
- The base carries the whole result. Compaction, blinding and falls decide whether the surface stays flat, and settlement in a poorly built base shows up as hollows in the turf that cannot be corrected from above.
- Moisture behaviour
- Water goes through the backing perforations and into the base, so drainage belongs to the ground works rather than to the turf. Where that water is meant to go is a design question for the professional team.
- Weathering and exposure
- Sunlight acts on the yarn and the backing over time, and colour and pile behaviour change with it. Manufacturers describe how their own product responds, and that information is specific to the yarn used.
- Maintenance
- Upkeep replaces mowing rather than removing it: brushing to lift the pile, clearing debris, dealing with organic growth in shade, and attending to infill where it is used. The regime comes from the installer.
- Appearance
- Pile direction is strongly visible and changes tone with the angle of view, so the direction of laying is a decision. Seams are the detail most likely to betray the surface if they are not set out carefully.
- Installation dependency
- Turf is joined on tape with adhesive, restrained at every edge, and cut around planting and features. Rolls have a direction, and mixing directions across an area shows immediately in the finished appearance.
- Repairability
- Local damage is repaired by cutting in a patch from the same roll direction and batch, so retaining offcuts matters. Colour and pile in a replacement piece rarely match a surface that has already weathered.

- How much direct sun does this area receive, and how hot does the surface become in it?
- Is the area shaded and slow to dry, with organic growth likely on the surface?
- What does the ground beneath do with water at present, and has anyone tested it?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- An engineered base is built and compacted first, and the turf is only as flat as that base.
- Drainage is designed into the base and the surrounding ground rather than left to the turf.
- A resilient layer beneath the turf, where used, becomes part of the build-up and of its depth.
- Every edge needs restraint and fixing, or the turf creeps and lifts at the perimeter.
- On a deck or terrace, the structure and its waterproofing are matters for the professional team.

- Pile direction changes the apparent colour, so all rolls are laid the same way round.
- Seams are the giveaway detail and their positions should be planned rather than left to roll width.
- Yarn blends with a shorter thatch read differently from a single colour single length pile.
