What ufh overlay board is
An underfloor heating overlay board is a rigid preformed panel with channels routed or moulded into its upper face to receive heating pipe. Boards are laid over a prepared subfloor in a pattern dictated by the pipe circuit rather than by the shape of the room, and some grades carry pressed metal spreading plates seated within the channels so the pipe is held against a continuous metal face rather than sitting in an air gap.
The distinction that matters most is against screed. A cement or flowing screed encases the pipe in a poured wet layer that has to be placed, allowed to cure and then allowed to dry before other work continues, and it adds its own depth to the floor. An overlay board is a dry component: it is set out and fixed like any other board layer, without pouring or site drying, which is why it appears in refurbishment where build-up height and programme are both constrained.
The board is only one part of a heating installation designed, installed and commissioned by other people. Output, warm-up behaviour, efficiency and operating temperature are properties of that whole installation and of the room it serves, and none of them are stated here. - A board layer only performs as well as the support beneath it allows. Flatness, soundness and movement in the deck or slab, and the way boards are fixed or bonded down, all deserve examination before any covering is chosen.
- Thermal behaviour
- Heat output, warm-up behaviour, running temperature and efficiency belong to the complete heating installation, its controls and the room it serves, not to a board. This reference states none of them; the heating designer is the source.
- Moisture behaviour
- Residual construction moisture and whatever damp-proofing sits below the floor affect everything laid above. Testing and the vapour control strategy should be settled by the professionals responsible before boards are laid.
- Installation dependency
- Setting out follows the pipe circuit rather than the room, so cut boards, turn areas, perimeter details and the sequence relative to first fix and skirting all need agreeing with the heating installer before packs are opened.
- Repairability
- Later access to a pipe or a joint means lifting the covering and part of the board layer. Recording the circuit layout and keeping that drawing costs nothing now, and its value only becomes obvious when access is needed.
- Documentation
- The manufacturer's literature for the exact board governs fixing method, permitted coverings, permitted levelling and adhesive products and any conditions attached to a guarantee. Ask for it by product, not by family.
