Rigid Core Vinyl Flooring (SPC Plank and Tile)
Explains how a stiff floating core changes what the base has to deliver compared with a bonded flexible vinyl, and why perimeter allowance and temperature driven movement become the governing concerns.

Overview
What rigid core vinyl is
Rigid core vinyl flooring is supplied as planks or tiles built around a dimensionally stiff core, either a mineral filled polymer compound or a denser foamed polymer. Over that core sits a printed decor film and a clear wear surface, and many products arrive with a resilient backing already attached. The edges are machined into a click profile, so units lock to one another and the floor is laid as a floating field.
The contrast with luxury vinyl tile is worth being precise about. Luxury vinyl tile is thin and flexible, bonded to the base with adhesive in its traditional form, and it follows whatever it is laid on: ridges, fastener heads, old adhesive and hollows all read through into the finished surface. A rigid core board is stiff enough to pass over small irregularities without telegraphing them, and it is not stuck down at all.
That trade is not free. Because the floor floats, it has to be free to move as one field: a continuous gap at the perimeter and around every fixed element, a limit on how far an unbroken field can run before a break is needed, and transition profiles at doorways rather than a continuous run through the whole plan. The polymer core also changes dimension with temperature, so sustained sun through glazing and heat within the floor build-up are directly relevant, and gapping or peaking at the joints is the classic complaint when the movement allowance was not provided.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Substrate dependency
- A stiff board bridges small irregularities that a flexible covering would telegraph, but it does not level anything. Larger deviations still show as movement, joint stress and a floor that flexes and clicks underfoot when walked on.
- Installation dependency
- Floating installation means the whole field moves together. The perimeter gap, the gap around pipes and fixed elements, and the transition profiles at doorways are the installation, not the trimming that follows it.
- Thermal behaviour
- The core changes dimension with temperature, and sunlit areas behave differently from shaded ones in the same room. Where a heated floor is involved, the specific product's documentation governs whether and how it may be used.
- Moisture behaviour
- The units themselves are polymer based, but the base beneath is not, and a floating floor traps whatever moisture is present below it. Assessing the base remains necessary even though nothing is being bonded to it.
- Acoustic behaviour
- A hard floating floor over a hard base can be noisy underfoot, which is why backings and separate resilient layers are used. Any real improvement belongs to the complete floor build-up and the structure, not to the plank.
- Surface wear
- The clear surface above the printed film takes all the traffic and cannot be refinished. Once it is worn through, the print beneath is exposed, which is why entrance protection and furniture pads matter more than they seem to.
- Repairability
- A damaged plank can be replaced, though reaching one in the middle of a field usually means unlocking back to it or cutting it out. Matching decor and batch later is the practical constraint.

- Which parts of this floor take direct sun through glazing, and for how long each day?
- Is there any heating within the floor build-up, and what does its documentation permit?
- What is the moisture condition of the base, and how will that be established?
- Will heavy fixed items such as tall units stand on the floor rather than beside it?
- How large is the unbroken field, and where would breaks fall if they are needed?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The base still needs to be within the flatness tolerance the manufacturer states for the product used.
- A separate underlay may or may not be permitted where a backing is already attached, and that is product specific.
- Perimeter gaps must survive skirting, thresholds and later joinery rather than being closed up by them.
- Doorways generally need a transition profile so that adjoining fields can move independently.
- Any moisture control layer below the floating floor is part of the build-up and is decided in advance.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Printed decors repeat over a limited number of designs, so planks are mixed to avoid an obvious pattern.
- Bevelled edges emphasise each plank and disguise small height differences between neighbours.
- Embossed textures may or may not register with the printed grain, and that difference is visible close up.
- Transition profiles at every doorway are part of the appearance and are worth looking at before committing.
- A hard floating floor sounds different underfoot from a bonded one, which people notice more than they expect.

- What happens at the joints if the field is not free to move, and how would that show?

- How long the wear surface lasts depends on traffic, grit, exposure and cleaning, and no page can state that for a particular room.
Upkeep

- What cleaning method does the manufacturer describe, and how much water does it permit?
- Are there products or machines the manufacturer specifically excludes from use on this floor?
- How is a damaged plank in the middle of a room replaced, and who would do that?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- Material is usually conditioned in the room before laying so it is at the temperature it will be used at.
- The perimeter and every fixed element need a gap, and that is set during laying rather than corrected after.
- Field size limits and the need for expansion breaks come from the manufacturer for the specific product.
- Underlay compatibility is product specific where a backing is pre-attached to the plank.
- Laying direction relative to the main light source and the room proportions is decided before starting.

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked points
- The stiffness that bridges small irregularities is heard as permission to skip base preparation entirely.
- Perimeter gaps get closed up by later joinery, and the floor then has nowhere to go when it expands.
- A large open plan laid as one unbroken field is a frequent cause of joint peaking later.
- Kitchen units built on top of a floating floor pin it in place, which the instructions usually address.
- Sound underfoot is often the first complaint about a hard floating floor, and it is rarely raised beforehand.
- Underlay is added out of habit beneath a plank that already carries a backing, which some manufacturers do not allow.
