What clay paving brick is

Clay paving brick is a small paving unit made from clay that is moulded or extruded, dried and then fired until the body closes up. Its colour comes from the clay and the firing conditions rather than from an applied coating, so the visible face and the material behind it are the same thing. Units are normally solid, without the frog or perforations found in walling units, because the whole of the face is walked or driven on.

The unit it is most often confused with is the clay facing brick, and the two are not interchangeable. A facing brick is a walling unit: it is bedded in mortar, judged on how it reads in a bonded wall, and frequently has a frog or perforations that would be exposed if it were laid flat. A paving brick is made to be trafficked, is laid on a prepared bedding layer inside a pavement build-up, and is described by its maker against paving criteria that a facing brick data sheet never addresses.

A clay paver is only one layer of a pavement. What sits under it - the formation, the sub-base, the laying course, the jointing and the edge restraint - and where water goes once it lands, govern how the finished area behaves far more than the unit does. Those layers, and any question of trafficking, drainage or frost exposure, are matters for a qualified professional working from the specific product's documentation.

Weathering and exposure
Fired clay units change by gradual softening of colour and by the growth of surface deposits rather than by loss of a coating. How a particular unit responds to frost, prolonged saturation and de-icing treatment is a product-specific matter set out in its documentation.
Surface wear
The wearing face is the same material as the body, so wear shows as a slow change of texture rather than as a break through to something different underneath. Traffic type, turning movements and grit carried onto the surface all affect how quickly that appears.
Moisture behaviour
Paving is wet and dry by turns, and water reaches it from above and from the ground. Whether the joints and the bed are intended to shed water or to let it through is a design decision about the whole construction, not a property of the unit.
Appearance
Colour and texture vary between units and within a single delivery, and blending from several packs is the ordinary way of handling that. Newly laid areas will not match adjacent weathered paving for some time.
Substrate dependency
The units form only the top layer. Formation, sub-base and laying course determine settlement, and a build-up designed for foot traffic is not the same construction as one designed for vehicles.
Maintenance
Upkeep usually means removing organic growth and topping up or repairing joints. Cleaning methods aggressive enough to erode the jointing can do more damage than the soiling they were brought in to remove.
Documentation
The maker's technical data for the exact unit is the starting point, together with its laying and jointing guidance and any statement about cleaning treatments it does not accept.

  • How much water reaches this area, and where is it intended to go once it arrives?
  • Do frost and saturation occur here together, and what does the product's documentation say about that combination?
  • Will de-icing salts, garden chemicals or fuel drips be present, and how would the units and joints respond?
  • How much shade and tree cover does the area carry, and how quickly is organic growth likely to appear?
  • Does the ground fall towards or away from the building, and how does that change what the paving has to deal with?

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The formation and sub-base carry the load; the paving unit spreads it but does not create the capacity.
  • The laying course sets level and tolerance, and its material has to be compatible with the jointing approach.
  • Edge restraints hold the field of paving together and belong in the design rather than being added afterwards.
  • Falls and drainage outlets have to be established before laying begins, because they cannot be introduced later.
  • Where paving meets a building, its relationship to damp-proof courses and thresholds is a matter for a qualified professional.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Laying pattern changes the visual grain of an area as much as the colour of the units does.
  • Blending units drawn from several packs reduces the banding caused by clay and kiln variation.
  • Joint width and jointing colour are as visible as the units once the area is complete.
  • Sawn cuts at edges and around obstacles show a different face from the moulded or extruded surface.
  • New clay paving will not match adjacent weathered paving until it has been exposed for a considerable time.

  • What does the maker say about the unit's resistance to abrasion in a paving context?
  • How are the edges restrained, given that small-unit paving often begins to fail at its perimeter?
  • If a section settles or a unit cracks, can it be lifted and replaced without disturbing the surrounding area?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What routine cleaning is proposed, and could it erode the jointing over time?
  • How are joints topped up or renewed, and who is expected to do that work?
  • Are spare units from the same batch being kept somewhere dry for future repairs?
  • If moss or algae appears, which treatments does the maker accept without withdrawing its guidance?
  • How will a repaired patch differ in appearance from the weathered area around it?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Setting out from an agreed datum and reference line determines where the cut units end up.
  • The sequence of edge restraint, laying course and jointing follows the maker's guidance for the specific unit.
  • Cutting produces dust and needs the right equipment, and cut faces have to be planned into the pattern.
  • Weather during laying affects jointing materials far more than it affects the units themselves.
  • Access for deliveries and for compaction plant needs resolving before work starts on site.

  • The maker's technical data sheet for the exact unit, in the size and finish being ordered.

  • Cleaning and aftercare information, listing treatments the maker does not accept.
  • Any statement the maker gives about the unit being offered for paving rather than for walling.

  • The unit is often chosen long before the build-up is designed, leaving the build-up to accommodate it.
  • Edge restraint failure, rather than unit failure, is a common reason small-unit paving loses its line.
  • Cut units at the perimeter are smaller and more easily dislodged than full units in the field.
  • Jointing is a consumable that needs attention, while the units themselves are assumed to need none.
  • A facing brick and a paving brick can look alike on a sample board and be offered by their makers for entirely different purposes.
